Keksipaketin rapinaa. Kahvinkeitin porisee viimeisillään.
Innostunutta puheensorinaa säästä, kisailua siitä kuka on
nukkunut vähiten viime yönä ja älykellon aktiivisuustulosten vertailua.

JUHANI
Laittasiksä Raija meille tosta
vähän…keksiä.

RAIJA
Mun on pakko avata vähän tät
ikkunaa, se on kumma ne ei oo
vieläkään saanu tot ilmanvaihtoa
kuntoon.

BIRGIT
Noniin tässä olis kaffetta nyt
sitten ja kiitos Jouni tuotko
sieltä meidän boksin.

Pöydälle nostetaan pahvilaatikko.
Pahvilaatikon kannet
repäistään auki.

RAIJA
Ai sä ihan tollalailla vaan..

Puheensorina lakkaa. Tuoleja siirrellään ja joku yskäisee
hiljaa.

BIRGIT

Jos mä puheenjohtajana nyt avaan
tämän ja tehdään niin, että
nostetaan sieltä yksi kerrallaan
näitä ideoita.

BIRGIT (CONT’D)
Meillähän oli viime vuonna tämä
”Experience nothing” mistä tuli
palautetta aika paljon
niinkun ehkä tiedätte.

BIRGIT (CONT’D)
Sieltä tuli muutamalta
taiteilijalta vihasia viestejä,
siis aivan vihapuhetta, erityisesti
tää paikallinen huovuttajakuvanveistäjä
oli pahottanu mielensä, että hänen elinkeinoaan
ajetaan alas tälläsellä
viestinnällä. Ja kyllä mä sen
ymmärrän.

JOUNI
Nii otanko mää täältä nyt näitä
lappuja…

BIRGIT
Odota Jouni, mä sanon nyt vaan,
että kaupungin toimijoina meidän
täytyy nyt tää konsepti muuttaa,
et tämä huumori ei nyt sitten ihan kohdistunut
oikein siinä meidän viime vuoden brändäyksessä.

Kuuluu raskasta puhinaa ja tuolin narinaa. Kuuluu askeleita
ja joku poistuu ovi paukahtaen. Jouni rapistelee laatikkoa
ja kuuluu paperilappusten hypistelyä.

BIRGIT (CONT’D)
Noni Jouni ole, hyvä. Montas lappua
siellä on?

Jouni rapistelee paperilappusia käsissään.

JOUNI
”Padasjoki- Rehtiä ja reilua sakkia”

BIRGIT
Okei, sieltä tuli ensimmäinen.
Kirjaatko Raija. Ja sitte?

JOUNI
”Padasjoelle voisi tehdä sisääntuloväylälle
(esimerkiksi pientareen aitaan kiinni)
rivistön kukkaistutuksia, jotka
istutettaisiin vanhoihin kumisaappaisiin
tai käytettyihin käsilaukkuihin. Näin saataisiin
myös kestävän kehityksen ajatusta
kaupunkiin tulijoille. Lisäksi
istutukset ovat hauskan näköiset,
jos kumisaappaita löytyisi eri
väreissä ja koissa”

RAIJA
Niin tuo ei nyt liittyny tähän
sloganiin…otetaan seuraava sieltä.

BIRGIT
Toisaalta, mä hirveästi tykkäsin
tosta kukka-ideasta, siinä on se
kierrätys ja ilmastoteema.

JOUNI
Ei täällä ole enää kun kaks lappua.

BIRGIT
Noni otetaan ne sitten pois niin
saadaan kokous päätettyä.

JOUNI

JOUNI (CONT’D)
naapurissani asuu Kuvataiteilija
Ansa Pelkonen, jolla näitä kauniita
akvarelleja. Ehdottaisin hänen
töitään esillepantavaksi.Iloa ja
valoa kaupunkiin. Terv. Raili
Vestman, eläkeläinen”

BIRGIT
Kiitos. Tässä tulikin…

RAIJA
Eikö me voitas harkita myös näitä
näyttelyitä, viime vuonna oli se
pop-up huoltoaseman pihalla, sehän
veti…

BIRGIT
Olisko herroilla siellä kommenttia
vai päätetäänkö äänestämällä?

Kuuluu puhinaa ja kännyköiden näppäilyä.

JUHANI
Nii en mä tiedä, teillä näytti
olevan siinä homma hallussa. Mulla
alkaa tossa palaveri 5 minuutin
päästä.

RAIJA
Jätetäänkö hautumaan?

Puheensorina alkaa uudelleen, tavaroita pakataan laukkuihin.

Marlena Martikainen: ”Padasjoki – Town of Equality & Solidarity”

The sound of a packet of biscuits being opened. A coffee maker is emitting its final gurgles. A low hubbub of voices discussing the weather, smartwatch stats and who had the least sleep last night.

JUHANI
Raija, you couldn’t sort out some
biscuits for us, could you?

RAIJA
I’m gonna need to crack this window open,
actually, can’t believe the a/c’s
still not sorted.

BIRGIT
Right everybody, coffee’s ready.
Jouni, grab the box for us would you please.

A cardboard box is placed on the table and ripped open.

RAIJA
Oh, right, so you just went ahead and…

The hubbub dies down. Chairs scrape against the floor, someone lets out a stifled cough.

BIRGIT
Well, seeing as I’m Chair, how about I
finish opening this and, what we’ll do is,
we’ll go through the entries together, one by one.

BIRGIT (CONT’D)
Now, as you’ll all recall,
last year we ran our “Experience Nothing”
campaign, which drew a fair bit of feedback.

BIRGIT (CONT’D)
A few of our artists were really quite unimpressed,
I mean it descended into hate speech really,
the felter-stroke-sculptor in particular was very upset,
claimed our campaign was jeopardising
her livelihood. And she did have a point, to be fair to her.

JOUNI
So, like, d’you want me to, like,
start pulling out the entries now or…

BIRGIT
Hang fire for now Jouni please. What
I’m trying to say is that we are
the city council, we’re the authority here,
and we absolutely need to come up with
a new brand concept now, we went with
humour last year, fine, good effort,
but it didn’t quite land, did it.

The sound of agitated breathing and then the creak of a chair. This is followed by the sound of departing footsteps and, finally, a door slamming shut. Jouni delves into the cardboard box, sheets of paper rustle in his hands.

BIRGIT (CONT’D)
Jouni, please go ahead. How many entries
are there?

Jouni shuffles the bits of paper he’s holding.

JOUNI
“Welcome to Padasjoki
– where the honest people live”

BIRGIT
Right, there’s our first contender.
Raija, did you get that down? Next!

JOUNI
“Some planters would be nice on the
approach road (positioned along the fence, for example).
You could grow the flowers in old welly boots and
handbags. That would send a really powerful message
about sustainability for visitors arriving here.
It would also look really fun if we could source wellies
in lots of different sizes and colours.”

RAIJA
Right, so there’s not much of a connection
with the slogan there… How about we move on?

BIRGIT
Although, I do actually quite like the flower idea,
because it brings together recycling and the climate.

JOUNI
Um, there’s, like, only two entries in here.

BIRGIT
Well, let’s hear them then, get this meeting wrapped up.

JOUNI
“To Whom It May Concern,

(MORE)

JOUNI (CONT’D)
I’m fortunate to have as my neighbour the artist
Ansa Pelkonen. Her watercolours are simply stunning.
I propose that you acquire her works
and place them on public display in our local area.
They are sure to be a source of cheer and delight for all.
Kind regards, yours sincerely, Raili Vestman, retiree”

BIRGIT
Right, thank you for that, Jouni. Now then…

RAIJA
I mean an art exhibition is definitely worth
thinking about, that pop-up at the petrol station
last year was a huge…

BIRGIT
And what about you gents, eh, got anything to add,
or should we just move on to a vote?
The attendees make a series of noncommittal sounds, their attentions directed at their mobile phones.

JUHANI
Well, what I would say is that it definitely looks like
you guys have this well in hand. And, um,
I’ve actually got a meeting starting in 5, so I, um…

RAIJA
So we’ll leave this to percolate, yes?

The hubbub starts up again, as the attendees pack up their things.
